Not ASCII, as its rocking tiles, music and sound, but since interest was shown in NetHack, some here might like Pathos: NetHack Codex, and not yet be aware of its awesomeness. playing without spoilers can be a nightmare, and the game was kinda meant to be played by sharing tips and advice with other people anyway If you do try it i would recommend reading the wiki or at least popping in to r/nethack. ive come to begrudgingly love it because there's nothing else like it, but that also makes it hard to recommend. It's intentionally really obtuse about all this stuff, which isnt helped by a chunk of those answers being puns or jokes or references. it's more about exploring the mechanics of the game and figuring out how all of its millions of systems and items and dungeon features and monsters all work. Nethack is very strange and kind of like a big puzzle. if you like loot games with randomly generated equipment it also provides that. "grindy" in that it lets you progress as slow or fast as you want without worrying about food. It's my least favorite of these, but it is just really well done and looks great even if youre not used to ascii.Īngband will also feel much more like a standard modern game than nethack. it's also strongly about working with what items you find rather than planning out a build or creating a certain set of tools. Part of its design is that it tries to be really clear and easy to understand (so the exact opposite of nethack).
